Microcurrent vs Red Light Therapy for Skin: Which Should You Use?
Share
If you're shopping for an at-home skin device, two technologies keep coming up: microcurrent and red light / LED therapy. They sound similar, but they work in completely different ways — and the best routine often uses both. Here's how to tell them apart.
What microcurrent does
Microcurrent uses a low-level electrical current to gently stimulate the muscles and tissue beneath the skin. People reach for it for a lifted, more sculpted, firmer-looking appearance — think jawline, cheeks and brow. The effect is most noticeable right after a session and builds with consistent use, which is why it's often called a “workout for your face.” Our Microcurrent Facial Toning Wand and V-Lifting Facial Massager are built around this.
What red light & LED do
Red light and LED therapy use specific wavelengths of light rather than current. Different colors are associated with different goals — red light is the most popular for an overall radiant, even, healthy-looking glow and supporting skin as part of a consistent routine. It's passive and relaxing: you wear it and let the light do the work. Our LED Light Therapy Face Mask delivers multi-color light hands-free.
Microcurrent vs red light — at a glance
| Microcurrent | Stimulates with gentle current · firmer, more lifted look · active, you glide the device · 5–10 min |
| Red light / LED | Treats with light wavelengths · radiant, even glow · passive, hands-free · 10–20 min |
So which should you use?
It's not really either/or. If your goal is a more sculpted, lifted look, start with microcurrent. If you want an all-over glow and a calming step you can do while you unwind, start with LED. Most people who want both simply alternate — or stack them.
How to combine them in one routine
- Cleanse so the skin is bare and product-free.
- LED first (10–20 min): relax with the face mask while the light works.
- Microcurrent next (5–10 min): apply a conductive gel and glide the wand upward and outward.
- Moisturize to seal everything in.
Two or three evenings a week is plenty to start. As with everything wellness, consistency beats intensity.
